Cambridge Uni, College Formal Dinner

Standard

You can refer to this post Harry Potter Dinner for part 1 of the story hehe

A day before my flight back to Malaysia, I managed to sneak in (not really) to one of the formal dinner
the students can bring 2 guests with them; so I was the one my sis brought with 😛

to cut things short; it started with drinks before entering the hall
here’s the waiting hall

and when you’re inside the hall; the person next to you will introduce themselves, chat with you yadda yadda yadda
really is a proper thing

that is such a good experience!
and of course on the table, they put on a complete set of wine glasses and utensils, those kind of proper thing you’d see in old English movies hehe – don’t you wonder which fork to use? which spoon? haha

I sat next to this grandpa uncle named… uhhh sorry I can’t remember lol
but he used to be a doctor for 40 years before retiring 20 years ago – he is pretty old 😉
he introduced himself by giving out his full name and got me caught in his flow and I was giving away my full name too AHAHAHA!
I usually introduce myself as Adila since it gets annoying to repeat my full name every time lol
I even need to repeat my name even when I’m saying it’s Adila – since it’s not an English name 😛

the food!
errrrrr~ it was alright but I’d prefer something else hehe
I think I had vegetable soup as the starter – pretty good tbh; main dish was some vegetable pastry with side dishes of sliced potatoes with gravy and cabbage; and dessert was fruit cocktails
of course that is the vegetarian option 😉

and ended with crackers and cheese (which I was told wine works best with cheese to lower? the cheese taste or something something)
too bad I can’t take any photos inside the hall; so I don’t have any!

funny story; well it’s funny for me
the uncle next to me asked if I’d like to have some cheese as I was looking at him
and I smiled and said, “I’m alright” – which means, no thank you (that is not something weird to say, right?)
then he said, “You mean, ‘NO’?”
I can only LOLed! and that got me thinking if I screwed up my English or something
it felt like he was correcting my English AHAHAHA! 😆
he was telling me the answer is NO not I’m alright
that is not the wrong thing to say, uhhh right? I’m not sure anymore xD heeeeeeee~
It’s not the right phrase to use but it’s not wrong either… I think? haha
kena study English again la!

anyway, here is yours truly with the gown (I don’t need to wear it actually; but I still did :P) and my sister on the right 😉

p/s: if you’re up to it, do try applying for Cambridge University. It’s such a proper place where you feel like everyone is such an elite! (of course only elites can get it, no?) – be one of them by trying to get in 😉
of course I’m going to try as well; I need to write a proposal before I get in touch with any supervisor in mind hehe~

Yay~

…I’m waiting for more good news to rock my day(s)!
today’s good news; I got a distinction for my MSc project w00t! Alhamdulillah 😀 😀

so now I’m waiting for the overall result; do pray for me that I’d get awarded MSc with distinction
AMEN!
I don’t know the final say; I really really really hope I’d get it (unless they change how things work)
the final result will be out in another 6 days – suffering!!!

since I’m feeling a bit too happy, too overjoyed, here’s a photo of my sis while we were out going around the city (Cambridge) last week 😉
the photo been up in my fb page for a few days already 😛

Harry Potter Dinner!

Standard

…misleading title hehe

my sis had her formal (matriculation) dinner a few days ago and I was impressed with the fact that they need to wear the gown – yep! the graduation gown thingy without the hood

Academic dress is worn quite often in Cambridge on formal, and sometimes informal, occasions, and there are a number of rules and customs governing when and how it is worn. A gown in their first week at Cambridge for the purpose of matriculation, which is the formal ceremony of enrollment in the University.

thanks wiki! 😛

anyway, it was something like what you see from the Harry Potter movies where in the dining hall they have the long table but the difference is people don’t wear the gown unless for the formal dinner thingy – and of course the hall is looking simpler than in Harry Potter’s 😛
I couldn’t tag along to the dinner but I did went to have breakfast in the hall once 😉

here goes the sort of Harry Potter formal dinner style lol
as usual, it’s on my fb page
I might upload a few more soon hehe

What’s your SECRET?

Standard

A few days ago I was asked this question…
How to become as clever as you?

I was speechless
was that a compliment or an insult?
I take that as a compliment; so, thank you for saying that I’m clever
korang rasa macam nak sepak I tak dgn statement I yg xbley blah ni? ekekekeke~

If you think I’m bragging, being so stuck up… seriously that is not my intention
there are things that you are better than me, obviously! 😉

how I wish I’m one of the top 3 geniuses in this world 😛
if I were, I’d try to get a country of my own or owning the world heeeee~ lolamboiiiii bkn main!
too bad I’m not and I’ve met tons of people who are way much better than me; be it in education, skills, life experience etc etc

during my undergraduate years, there is this one guy whom I think is brilliant!
he just graduated last year as he did an integrated master, MEng. I heard that he’s starting his PhD this October in another uni
good for him, I wish him best of luck since he deserves it! 😉

when I first knew him, I found him annoying; but when I got to know him, I got envy of his brain!
he’s not a show off person, well, I don’t think he was showing off; it was more like… he likes to help and teach other people especially when you ask him to explain some stuffs (or when he thought that you seem to need some help)
I’m an ego person, full with pride; so, being taught without I’m asking for it pissed me off lol

we once had this maths assignment during our first year and incidentally, he saw me in the library and joined me to do it together
I’m okay in maths but I easily forget things – including, if you were talking to me, try asking me what I was saying 5 mins ago, I more likely to have forgotten what I was saying lol

anyway, back to the story…
I was flipping through some books and the lecture notes to refresh my memory but him!
oh my goodness! he could solve it within a minute! It wasn’t a hard question, not that easy either
I was pretty much pissed off; why can he do it while I was still trying to refresh my memory?
that totally woke me up; HELLO ADILA? YOU THINK YOU CAN GET GOOD MARKS WHEN THINGS AIN’T AT THE END OF YOUR FINGERTIPS? DEEP TROUBLE, ADILA!

so I was saying something along this line… “Woah! that was fast! you’ve revised that chapter already?”
and… guess what!
he came to classes prepared; read what the lecturers are going to teach in the next class beforehand and revise what has been taught every single night!
hats down! how many people do that? I bet only 1 out of 100 students would do that! – I didn’t either lol once a week was what I did ehe~

I did worked as a teaching assistant before, assisting the 2nd year students in Software Engineering subject
…a lot of students didn’t read the lab sheet beforehand, didn’t try to understand what was required and didn’t bother to try things out
I was once asked to explain what the lab sheet was about to them when they didn’t take the initiative to try it themselves
worse, there were students whom only bother to understand the content of weeks of the lab sheets at the end; when it was nearer to their assignment deadline
is that the attitude to get excellent mark? YOU’RE SO DEAD. PERIOD!
I can’t sit the exams for them, right?

I don’t know about genes or whatnot but I am certain that no one is good in something without putting any effort in it
do you think it’s fair when someone tells that friend of mine, OMG YOU’RE A GENIUS! when the truth, he worked his ass off every single day, cramming things into his brain until he can know things without flipping the books anymore?

if you have the drive, motivation and aim, InsyaAllah you will succeed
if you don’t succeed, that just means you didn’t put enough effort
does it make sense to fail in something when you have worked extremely hard? NO!
…well, things could happen unexpectedly

anyway, I just wanted to show off some graduation photos of my fellow friends that I took in July ehe~
the above story was just as a reminder and advice to those who think that they can’t get good results because they are not born as a genius 😛
this friend of mine is also going into PhD starting this October or was it in January? lol
brilliant guy 😉
and oh, this is not the guy I was talking about previously

btw, the graduation for my uni this year was at Westminster which is so near to the Parliament, London Eye and Westminster Abbey
totally the best location for photos! 😉

here are some photos that I finally had my hands on 😛

and here are some other graduation photos of mine
